Cubs Trip to Nenagh Allotments
The Cubs will visit Nenagh Allotments this autumn.
When we go to the allotments, we will try to meet the allotment holders. We will see if we can help them in some way and learn at the same time. We will look at the polytunnels and the equipment that we use to work on our plots.
Here are some things for us to think about:
- Food costs us money. Can we save money by growing our own?
- Food production can harm the environment. Pesticides and fertilisers can be bad. Food often needs to be transported from far away, packaged and sold in supermarkets.
- Agriculture relies on cheap imported oil as an energy source. Will this continue to be available? How does burning fossil fuels harm the environment?
- Growing your own food is a great hobby. Think about getting fresh air, exercise and working with local people at the allotment. And you can eat the results!
- In spring, we sow seeds. Plants grow rapidly over the summer and produce fruit in the autumn. We have to plan the year so that we have something to eat for as long as possible.
- We might think about storing our produce for times when there is nothing to eat.
- Do you know which fruits and vegetables are available in which season, and which will grow well in our climate?
- What do plants need to grow and produce fruit and vegetables? How can we deal with pests and diseases?
